Hassan Youness from DC Pro Engineering won the Young Engineer of the Year at the MEP Awards 2010, held last night at the Westin in Dubai.
"I am really grateful for this award, which is vindication of DC Pro Engineering's strategy of encouraging its staff to push themselves and excel," said Youness. "The company is really focused on its staff, and this nurtures excellence in everyone."
This category attracted the most number of submissions, prompting the judges to comment: “It is fantastic to see the depth of engineering talent flourishing in this part of the world, even at these toughest of times.”
There were two Highly Commended individuals. The judges praised Brian Lugg from CKR Consulting Engineers as “a highly-qualified and capable engineer, who has succeeded throughout university and in his young professional career to make his mark on the MEP field.”

The judges cited Ray Choi “for developing internal and external skills on a multiplicity of projects”, which “is great exposure for a young engineer.”
However, Youness was singled out as the winner for becoming only the second engineer in the UAE, and the third in the Middle East, to receive High-Performance Building Design Professional (HBDP) certification from ASHRAE of the US.
“Youness’ drive and determination is demonstrated by his LEED AP qualification, but more so by his HBDP qualification. This is indeed of special significance, and one which draws him out from his peers in this category,” said the judges.
“DC Pro also deserves great credit for allowing Youness to undertake this qualification, especially given its smallish size in the local industry, but its forward-looking aspects in energy-saving are of special significance. With young engineers like Youness gaining technical knowledge and skills, we can only look forward to better building designs in the future.”
