A 100,000 seat stadium for the delayed King Abdullah Sports City development in Jeddah is soon to start construction following approval from the Saudi monarch, Custodian of the two Holy Mosques.
“The king wants to establish the proposed stadium in a place close to Jeddah and near the airport, as well as to expand Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium in the city,” said Prince Nawaf bin Faisal, head of the Youth Welfare Presidency, speaking at the end of the King cup final yesterday.
“We’ll give top priority to this new stadium project,” the prince told reporters, adding that architect Arup is working on the new design.

Abdullah Sports City was first launched in 2008 and is scheduled to contain a specialist hospital and youth hostel as well as the stadium over 900ha.The king approved the project in February 2009.
Prince Nawaf thanked King Abdullah for his investment in sports facilities in the Kingdom, emphasising the great improvements in Saudi football and the government’s effort to boost Saudi training in various areas of sports-related professions.
“A group of Saudis have obtained master’s degrees in various sports-related specializations and met with King Abdullah. We want Saudis to specialize not only in administrative matters but also in technical matters,” he said.
Approval for the development is the latest area of construction investment this year in Saudi’s second biggest city. In February, renovation of the city’s airport began, the start of a three-year project that will see the construction of new terminals, the reparation of existing facilities, and more than double the capacity of passengers annually from 17 million to 35 million. Saudi Binladin Group is the main contractor in a SAR 27bn deal.
Earlier this month, Makkah governor Prince Khaled Al-Faisal launched a four phase development for the city’s Corniche area that will see the renovation of Ghaleel, Ajaweed, Samir and Quwaiza and other areas. It follows his pledge to build 30,000 houses in the city to improve general living standards in the city and help those whose homes were damaged in the flood in February.
