47. HUSSAIN J. AL-NOWAIS
EMIRATES STEEL INDUSTRIES

Hussain J. Al-Nowais is the MD and Chairman at Emirates Holdings. Al-Nowais served as the CEO and Vice Chairman of Abu Dhabi Basic Industries Corporation. He serves as the Chairman of Emirates Steel Industries (ESI), and has over 25 years’ experience in banking, finance, investment, industries and project development.

ESI, formally Emirates Iron & Steel Factory (EISF), is a wholly-owned government factory strategically located at the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD). The factory is the largest steel plant in the UAE.

Established in 2001 to satisfy the growing demand for quality steel products for the UAE’s fast-developing construction sector, ESI is the only significant domestic supplier of deformed reinforcing steel bar or rebars.

The rolling mill has a design capacity of 600,000t of rebar a year. In early June, ESI announced that its 150t electric arc furnace at its Phase 1 steel making plant had exceeded its design capacity.
