2011 CONSTRUCTION WEEK POWER 100

1-10 | 11-20 | 21-30 | 31-40 | 41-50 | 51-60 | 61-7071-80 | 81-90 | 91-100

> The Power 100 - Full List

So how was the list compiled? Well, we have defined power as influence. Put simply, the more people you can influence, the more powerful you are. Earlier this year, the CW team initiated the process of deriving at the ultimate Power 100 with a long list of over 500 names. We looked at every sector: developers, contractors, consultants, engineers, architects, designers, captains of industry and material suppliers.

Our editorial team closely studied the work they have been doing – the number of staff employed, revenues generated, profits earned, contracts won and projects in the pipeline. We have also looked at how these people and companies have responded to the downturn, what strategies they have adopted, and how flexible and adaptable they have been in the face of new challenges and obstacles.

We have also examined the impact of technology and innovation, and leadership qualities and status, both in the region and on a global scale. Thereafter we refined our initial long list. The positions from 11 to 100 were chosen by the CW editorial panel. However, for the exact placing of the top ten, we used a voting system, with each member of our panel scoring 10 points for the individual they felt should be No.1, and so on. The more points, the higher the placing.

We should make clear that the Power 100 is not scientific, and purely represents our analysis and breakdown of power in the construction industry.

This year’s number one is Ayman Hariri, the deputy general manager and a board director at Saudi Oger, one of Saudi Arabia’s biggest construction firms, integral to the transformation of the Kingdom’s economy. At number two is Bakr Bin Ladin, chairman of the Saudi Binladin Group, one of the world’s largest construction dynasties. Palestinian-born Riad Kamal, one of the UAE’s most recognisable executives as founder and chairman of Arabtec Construction, is at number three, while Emaar Properties chairman Mohammed Alabbar is at number four. Zuhair Hamed Fayez, founder of one of the biggest and best-known consultancies in Saudi Arabia, is at number five.

MIDMAC chairman HH Sheikh Hamad Bin Abdulla Bin Khalifa Al Thani is at number six. Sheikh Hamad has defined the rise and rise of Qatar, as it becomes one of the world’s fastest-growing construction markets in the build-up to the 2022 FIFA Football World Cup. Similarly, Ashghal President Nasser Ali-Mawlawi, at number seven, as head of the government’s infrastructure and utilities department, is seeing his star ascending.

Of course, it all began with the CEO of the Qatar World Cup Bid, Hassan Al Thawadi, who is at number eight on the Power 100. The sole woman in the top ten is Al Jaber Group CEO Fatima Obaid Al Jaber. Finally, the number ten slot is taken by Abdullah Al-Khodari Chairman Ali Al Khodari.

The Power 100 research team and editorial panel: Anil Bhoyrul, Stuart Matthews, Gerhard Hope, Ben Roberts, Carlin Gerbich, Stephen White, Oliver Ephgrave, Jennifer Eagle and Rana Jimaa.
