Saeed Ahmed, Pre-contract and commercial director, Emrill
What does your role involve?
The role as pre-contract and commercial director is a varied one. I’m responsible for a number different departments including business development, work winning and obviously commercial. It is quite a big team.
My role involves overseeing everything from the prospect of a new job to pre qualification, tendering, negotiation, and contract mobilisation. Once we have mobilised a contract and handed over to the operations team, that’s when our role ends, however we do have involvement in any ongoing client negotiations and supply chain. It’s a great role, I really enjoy it.
Why FM?
I have a degree in Forensic and Analytic Chemistry from the University of Strathclyde. When I was eighteen I believed I wanted to be the next Quincey!
After three years of studying chemistry, I decided that I wanted a change and in 2004, I joined Carillion, Emrill’s operating company, in the UK. I was lucky enough to be accepted on to the Carillion structured leadership development program and through that I gained a vast amount of experience of various roles within the business.

was exposed to general management, project management, operations and business development.
I suppose I sort of fell into FM, but I have thoroughly enjoyed it the entire time.
What’s new for your company this year?
A new leadership team has been the biggest change for Emrill this year. With it, the team has brought a number of years of specialised experience at management level and a wholly new culture.
It has been helping us drive our strategy forward and we are keen to drive empowerment through the business, ensuring that staff at all levels are empowered to make decisions. I believe we’re now better structured to meet market challenges and hold our position as the number one provider in the UAE.
Where do you see FM in five years time?
The biggest thing to hit the UAE FM market is JOP Law. It will have a significant impact on the market as the set up of OAs means there is a lot more focus on value.
OAs are keen to drive quality whilst delivering value for money. We now have the opportunity to enter more markets which were previously closed to us. This has been bountiful from our point of view.
I also believe there will be bigger investments in technologies such as online customer portals which we are already at the forefront of.
Advice for a new FM recruit?
FM is such a people business. It is all about building relationships. Whether with operatives, delivery managers or at the high end client level – FM is all about people, clear communication and concise information.
Whatever level you are at in your career, build your personal relationships and ensure you always deliver on your promises.
What do you do in your spare time?
I’m a cricketer. I like all sports but cricket is my favourite. I love playing it and watching it. Back home, in the UK, I used to play cricket three to four times a week. Now I’m about to join the successful Emrill cricket team which I hope I’ll be good enough to play for!
Why should fmME readers use your company?
Because of our quality. I genuinely believe Emrill is unrivalled in Dubai. We offer value for money and innovative solutions that are leading the market.
