In a sign of the increasing attraction of the Qatar construction industry, 300 consultants submitted tenders for a single urban infrastructure package, according to a source close to the project.
“The tender was for general infrastructure in Doha with the project covering a five-year period,” the source said, on the sidelines of Saudi Build 2011, the Riyadh-based exhibition happening this week.
“Three hundred consultants went for it.”
The Gulf state has become a magnet for consultants and contractors in the last 18 months, as higher government spending on infrastructure and housing has met with feverish anticipation for main contracts linked to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Nine stadia are to be built, with three in the capital to be renovated, in time for the global football event, and consultants have also been vying for major masterplanning and rail contracts that will link to the venues.Sources told Reuters that six companies are in the running to win the main project management contract, includng Arup, Mace and US-based Turner.
Another project that has garnered significant interest is the Doha metro, a proposed 85km network. Three major packages have received prequalifications from contractors so far: the overground, the underground and the enabling work. The source added that an average of 60 contractors bidded for each package, the source added, with 13 of them originating from China.
The Doha subway is worth an estimated $25bn, with the first phase of construction worth $6bn, which will then be broken down into packages worth around $1bn.
Qatar’s Ministry of Communications and transport was unavailable for comment.
