A total of 80% of Qatar’s proposed metro rail will be underground or elevated, according to Eng. Ghanim Al Ibrahim, group director at the Qatar Railways Company.

“The proposed metro rail network will have four lines spread across 212km; of which 42% (89km) will be constructed underground and 38% (81km) elevated, and the remaining 20% (42km) on the ground,” said Eng. Al Ibrahim.

Qatar's Integrated Rail Network comprises a long-distance passenger and freight rail route of about 490km, which will have nine passenger stations and six terminals. Of this, 30km will be underground.

The metro will be 212km, to be constructed in a phased approach. In Phase 1, a total of 135km will be completed by 2020, which will have 53km underground and 48km elevated, with 47 stations. Phase 2 will be completed by 2026.
