The FM department at Dubai International Airport is looking at ways to invest in an apprentice recruitment programme, to get the right people trained up before they are recruited.
One of the greatest challenges in airport FM is finding the right staff for specialised areas, says Omar Binadai, senior general manager, FM, DXB.
“We always have the challenge of resource availability, somebody with expertise in baggage handling is very difficult to find. So what we’ve started doing is employing new graduates. We take care of training and let them shadow someone so they can handle the contracts in the future. This is one of the things we are focusing on; getting the talent, local or national to join the airport.
“Most people we interview when they come here are very passionate about working at the airport. It is picking out and training those people. We are working closer with our HR services to find a program to sponsor students during their study, like they do in DEWA and other entities in Dubai so we can get them ready before they graduate.”
