Industry development is all about learning from what the other is good at. But what exactly is best practice, and how does it look in practice? fmME finds out.
The term ‘best practice’ has been kicking about for a couple of years in the industry. But with the various sections within the industry from cleaning and training to security and FM consultancy, there is no clear cut set of rules as to what best practice involves.
The dictionary definition of best practice is that it is a method or technique that has consistently shown results superior to those achieved with other means, and that it can be used as a benchmark and that it can evolve further to become better as improvements are discovered.

Best practice is considered by some as a business buzzword, used to describe the process of developing and following a standard way of doing things that multiple organisations can use.
But, while the FM industry of the west is more established and can set the standard for the Middle East to follow, it is crucial to remember that operating in different regions means needs and requirements differ.
In the UK while best practice in heating systems is essential, it is irrelevant in the UAE where there is a huge demand for AC.
But the main point behind best practice is to use each other’s experiences and to learn from them, either by duplicating them or by bettering them.
Industry standards can be set and followed. These are fixed specifications or benchmarks, established by independent bodies.
Applying the appropriate standards to your business will enable you to apply best practice across the organisation, and to work against objective criteria to achieve manufacturing or service quality as the below companies demonstrate.
