The Saudi government has given the go-ahead for the second phase of construction on the high-speed Haramain rail project.
The second phase of the project includes the construction of railway tracks, installation of signalling and telecommunication systems, electrification, operational control centre and the procurement of 35 trains.
It also includes operation and maintenance of the project for a period of 12 years. The contract was earlier awarded to Saudi-Spanish Al-Shoula consortium at a cost of $9.3 billion, but needed to be ratified by the Saudi government before actioning.

The project is a 444km high-speed inter-city rail transport system linking the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah via Rabigh and King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, a key entry point for millions of pilgrims.
The contract will be signed at the end of the month, and work is scheduled to begin soon after.
More than 3,000 properties will be acquired to make way for the line between Makkah and Ribigh. Authorities said last week that over 90% of the buildings that need to be expropriated for the Haramain high-speed rail project are owned by unknown landlords.
This has delayed the project as the government searches for the errant landlords, according to Transport M inister Dr. Jabarah Al-Suraisiry.
