As the 2011 MEP Awards approaches, MEP Middle East looks back at some of last year’s winners and asks how things have changed since they won their award
Consultant of the year:
Winner: Atkins
Since winning the MEP Award for Consultant of the year for 2010, the MEP division of Atkins has continued to spread and diversify its skill base across the entire region, moving into new sectors, regions and technologies.
“We remain as committed as ever to maintaining design excellence, and despite the challenging commercial environment of today’s projects we continue to build on our established core principles of safety and excellence,” says Michael Heywood, design operations manager.
The company’s development across the GCC has combined with successes and key project wins in countries such as India and Russia to spur growth in Atkins’ technical teams.

“Our reputation for getting the job done and delivering a world class product is opening new opportunities throughout our core territories, including healthcare, residential and commercial developments in KSA,” says Heywood.
This year in KSA, Atkins has continued to deliver and support a major multi-modal transport infrastructure project, while in the UAE the company has been undertaking preliminary engineering design for stages 1, 2 and 3 of the 1,200km Etihad Rail project.
Yas Island Water Park in Abu Dhabi was one of its key projects during year, while other project wins in the sector have helped cement the company’s reputation as a regional leader in water park design.
