Alistair Mitchell, the principal mechanical engineer for Hyder Consulting, was crowned as Engineer of the Year at the 2011 MEP Middle East Awards at the Address Marina in Dubai.
The judges praised Mitchell for his contribution to the MEP industry in the Middle East, highlighting his “exemplary skills in each category requirement, which made him the standout engineer in this very competitive category,” the judges said.
They also praised the efforts of Bill Jolly from KEO International Consulting and Dr Robert Cooke from Buro Happold, but said that Mitchell’s expertise of the mechanical, electrical and plumbing sectors and his work to share that knowledge with his engineers and site staff made him a worthy winner on the night.

“I’m very pleased we won tonight. It’s an honour and this speaks for all the people I’ve worked with. It’s not just about one person, when somebody makes you look good, it’s because they’re good,” he told
MEP Middle East modestly.
The judges added that his work with clients and contractors had been instrumental in developing strong bonds on both sides of the fence, which allowed him to bridge gaps and resolve issues all across the GCC.
The man himself considered his work on the Burj Khalifa project to be a career highlight and he said that after working on it for a ‘very long time’, he and Hyder Consulting were on the verge of handing it over at the end of the year.
“That would certainly be the highlight for me, for the year and of my career,” he concluded.
