Mercury Middle East, the multi-national MEP contractor, won the title of Specialist MEP Contractor of the Year at the 2011 MEP Middle East Awards in Dubai on Wednesday night.
The Qatar headquartered subsidiary has grown from its initial offices in Qatar and Bahrain and a turnover of $17.02m in 2008 to a turnover of around $130m in 2011 and offices and projects in Qatar, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi and Oman.
“It’s a big achievement for Mercury in the Middle East, to be recognised by the industry. We’re now one of the established, we’re recognised by our peers as a company that is (going places),” said a delighted Eamonn Philips, regional general manager of Mercury Middle East.

Judges highlighted its work on the Doha Showcase Stadium, which was instrumental in the Arab country getting the rights to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
“For a family owned company, it’s a big achievement, it really is. Nine years ago we started on the Museum of Islamic Arts and built the company from there. We progressed from Qatar to Bahrain and then into Oman, and now we’re in Abu Dhabi and it’s been a success,” Philips added.
As a result, he is looking towards 2012 with a sense of optimism as his company has recently been awarded five or six projects, with the largest and most prestigious one being the Qatar Foundation Central Library, a state of the art 45,000m2 building that is scheduled to open in mid-2013.
“I think 2012 will be quiet, it’ll be to the middle of 2013 that we’ll see a big uptake. Qatar will start picking up for the World Cup and the whole GCC will benefit from it. I think next year will be about consolidation in the market and hopefully we’ll be part of something bigger as it goes on,” Philips concluded.
