A 40-year-old Indian national died while trying to save co-workers trapped in an underground water storage tank on a construction site in Abu Dhabi, it was revealed on Monday.
Padmanabhan Nair, a labour supervisor with Asqalan Construction and Development, died during the rescue attempt. It's believed he may have succummed to carbon monoxide poisoning as he attempted to free co-workers trapped in the water storage tank at a site on Muroor Road in Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi police are investigating the incident, and were unavailable for comment when contacted by Construction Week.
According to a report by The National newspaper, Nair climbed down into the tank, which was 11 metres below ground, with two other workers to retrieve a colleague, Jusim Khora, who had collapsed at the bottom of the tank while carrying out waterproofing on its interior.

One of the workers, Dilroy Khan, told the newspaper that he saw Nair and the other worker, Surendran Amma Sujith, collapse in front of him.
“I got scared when I saw both of them falling unconscious in front of me. I did not waste a second and escaped from the place, it was too frightening,” he said.
According to news reports, rescue police had to be called to the site to pull the men from the tank.
Sujith and Khora were rushed to hospital to be treated, while Khan was released after a day of treatment. Nair was pronounced dead on arrival.
“He went inside to pull them out, but unfortunately he died while trying to save the two,” Khan said.
