The developer behind MediaCityUK, deemed Britain’s worst building by Building Design, has unveiled plans for further phases at Salford Quays over the next 20 years.

The existing $970million scheme, inspired by Dubai’s successful Media City, picked up the top ‘honour’ in the architecture magazine’s 2011 Carbuncle Cup

Developer Peel is now seeking outline approval from Salford City Council for an additional 459,000m2, with the aim of creating a new town centre for Salford Quays in four separate phases of development.

Discussions have already taken place with the local authority and this process will be extended to existing businesses, interested parties and the wider community.

Stephen Wild, managing director, MediaCityUK, said: “We see the new development playing a pivotal role in supporting what Peel has already built in the initial phases, as well as furthering the city council’s aspiration of creating a new town centre at Salford Quays.

“This is a 20-year plan and demonstrates our continuing long-term commitment to the area. We will now consult as widely as possible in producing our detailed plans.”

The existing section of MediaCityUK was designed by Wilkinson Eyre, Chapman Taylor and Fairhurst Design Group and provides the regional headquarters of the BBC and ITV, the media studies department of Salford University, a hotel, housing and a school.

The extension is planned to contain office, residential, hotel, retail, leisure and public spaces, as well as a pedestrian loop around a dock.
