At least four construction workers fell to their deaths and several more were injured in separate incidents over the weekend after scaffolding on which the men were working collapsed.

In Dubai, two workers were killed when the scaffolding on a building under construction in Dubailand, opposite Dubai Silicon Oasis, on the Dubai-Al Ain Road, collapsed.

Ambulances rushed to the scene as fellow workers desperately applied life-saving first aid treatment to those in need. The injured workers were flown to Rashid Hospital by emergency helicopter.

A police spokesperson confirmed that two workers had died in the incident, which occurred at around 11am on Saturday morning.

“Investigations are going on to find the cause of the accident,” the policeman said. “Two workers are dead and nine injured.”

The accident happened at a seven-storey residential building. Hundreds of workers were at the site when the scaffolding gave way.

“I thank God for being alive,” Indian worker Ashwini Kumar told The National, adding that he clung on to a pipe in order to survive.

“The scaffolding collapsed like a pack of cards. I shivered in fear that I would be dead.”

“People were screaming and shouting as it fell off. Some people were pulled out of the rubble to take them to the hospital. It was a frightening scene."

The majority of the workers at the site are believed to be from India and Bangladesh.

The site has been sealed as the investigation continues.

Meanwhile, in Abu Dhabi, five men fell from a residential building under construction next to the Euro Hotel on Muroor Road in the Al Falah area. The incident happened around 10.30am on Friday, 20 January before prayer time.

Two of the men, an Indian and a Bengali, died at the scene of the accident. The other three were rushed to hospital.

Abu Dhabi Police said the incident is under investigation.

The Ministry of Labour is awaiting the final report from Abu Dhabi Police before conducting their own investigation on the developers.
