Shinwoo Development is using a fleet of seven Liebherr tower cranes, including a newly-purchased Liebherr 1250 HC 40, to construct a plant for Samsung Electronics. Upon completion, the new crane will be shipped to Abu Dhabi for use in construction of a nuclear power plant.

The new plant is being built at Asan by contractor Shinwoo Development, which purchased the crane from Gintex Korea, Liebherr’s distributor in South Korea.

The crane was delivered direct from Germany. It will remain on the Samsung site for only five months, after which time Shinwoo will ship it to Abu Dhabi for use on its power plant contract.

Hyeon-joon Kang, the Gintex engineer who commissioned the crane and who will travel to Abu Dhabi to erect the unit there for Shinwoo, says the crane will join another Liebherr 1250 HC 40 on the nuclear project.

“Shinwoo is using the crane on two different buildings at the Samsung plant. The contractor is on a very tight schedule, and is working through the night to complete it on time."

Kang said the crane met the best combination of lift capacity and height specifications for this project, given that two separate buildings within the plant site are being built with this crane.

“At the same time, the contractor was planning ahead for the power plant contract, and decided that the 1250 HC 40 was also best for that project," explained Kang.

In addition, Shinwoo ordered a second 1250 HC 40 unit, which is being delivered direct from Europe to the UAE. Gintex will set up both cranes in Abu Dhabi.

Liebherr’s HC range of cranes is specifically designed for heavy lifts with very high hook heights and long jibs. The 1250 HC 40 has a maximum free standing height of 92.2m, and a maximum lift capacity of 40t.

“At the Samsung project, the crane is working at a height of 60m, with a 50m under-hook height,” said Kang. “Although the full length of the boom is 80m, it is only working at 64m here, owing to the proximity of another building in the plant. When installed at Abu Dhabi, however, the two cranes will be configured to work at full capacity.”

Shinwoo is using six other Liebherr units on the Samsung project, comprising a combination of 800 HC 20 and 315 HC-L units.
