A new construction accident report unveiled by Abu Dhabi Municipality has revealed that a worker was killed at the New York University site on Saadiyat Island last month.
The 31-year-old Bangladeshi was crushed to death by an improperly installed column. He was struck by a half-tonne beam.
Developer Mubadala said work at the site was shut down in December while an inquiry was underway. "The health and safety of all staff continues to be of the utmost importance to Mubadala and its partners," said a spokesperson.
The reported listed the cause of the accident as "unsafe standing of worker who erected the beam" and "not clear instructions from the supervisor".

A lack of supervision and a lack of knowledge of proper procedure were also cited as factors. The worker was employed by AASA Middle East Contracting.
The report reveals that the supervisor meant to be overseeing the installation of the column was not working at the time of the accident, which occurred at 09:50 on 16 December.
The report did not reveal whether the main contractor, Al Futtaim Carillion, was fined.
