Bee'ah has officially rolled-out its blue and green rubbish bins today in line with World Environment Day on Sunday. The announcement was made at a press conference at the Sharjah Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
It marked the launch of 2,000 pairs of the bins to be distributed across Sharjah City, designed to aid and encourage waste segregation at home.
The shift from the current waste collection system to the dual-stream recycling process is hoped to cut down on the amount of potentially recyclable waste going to landfill as Sharjah gears up for its zero waste by 2015 goal.
"Every year, Sharjah households generate around 600,000 tonnes of waste, of which we are recovering a small percentage for recycling, and the rest goes to landfill,” commented HE Salim Al Owais, chairman of Bee'ah.
“This number will drastically reduce with the residential recycling programme, boosting an increase of 5% to 10% towards our target.

"We are currently reaching more than 40%, and need every percent in order to reach our objective of 100% waste to landfill by 2015," said Al Owais.
Though Al Owais declined to comment on the size of the investment made into rolling out the new initiative, he confirmed to fmME that it involved "high costs."
The first sector to receive the new system is Sector 5 in the Al Shahba sub-sector, to be followed by the Halwan sub-sector, and thereafter the remaining sectors by end 2012.
Pavements in Sharjah will be reengineered in collaboration with the Sharjah City Municipality to accommodate the new bins.
