A suspended ceiling collapsed at a newly-opened cafe at Mushrif Mall in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, lightly injuring two patrons and burying them under rubble.
The incident has sparked a call for an investigation into construction standards at the shopping mall, which opened in August last year.
Mushrif Mall manager Rakan Al Harais commented that "the drywall fell down." He added that the suspended ceiling was the responsibility of the cafe owners, and not the mall contractors.
Al Harais added that management could call for a second round of building inspections, following the final inspections when the outlets were completed.
