The Republic of Djibouti has invited eligible contractors to submit pre-qualification bids for the construction of the Tadjoura Port, it was announced on Sunday.

The cost of the port’s construction will be financed from the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development and the Saudi Fund for Development.

The government of Djibouti has nominated the ‘Direction du Projet du Port de Tadjoura’ under the ‘Ministère de l’Equipement et des Transport’ to act as the implementing agency.

“The ‘Direction’ intends to: pre-qualify contractors and/or joint ventures of contractors for the construction of the Tadjoura Port,” the pre-qualification notice said.

“The scope of work comprises of the construction of the harbor in the Tadjoura locality. Interested applicants should have an annual turnover of at least $34m, and evidence should be submitted of at least two successfully completed projects of similar nature and complexity during the last five years,” the noticed added.

Saad Omar Guelleh, project director with the Ministry of Equipment and Transports, told Construction Week that the applicants had to meet the specific technical and finanical requirements before being considered for the project.

"The aim of the project is to build a harbour with a new control tower and all port facilities in the Tadjoura Locality," he said.

The ministry said that there would be an international competitive bidding process, with invitations to bidders expected to be made by March 18, 2012. Pre-qualification will be conducted through ‘pre-qualification procedures.’

"After we receive the applications from the interested companies, we will then select the qualified applicants and send them an invitation letter to participate in the tender," Guelleh added.

Tender documents are expected to be submitted in English and submitted by March 04, 2012, at 12:00pm, GMT+3.
