Construction contractor Carillion Alawi was one of the big winners at last night’s Construction Week Awards – Oman, collecting three awards, including a Project of the Year accolade.

The awards were among 13 presented at a gala event held to honour, reward and recognise the achievements of the Omani construction industry.

The team from Carillion Alawi collected one of two Project of the Year Awards for its work on the Royal Opera House, Muscat - presented by David Clifton, business development director for Hill International - while also picking up the prizes for Health and Safety Initiative of the Year and Sustainability Initiative of the Year.

The judges described their selection of the Royal Opera House, Muscat as one of the project winners as ‘an obvious choice’. They pointed out the project’s exceptional quality and the highly successful venue that was the result of its completion. They said it was a difficult project to beat given its significance, location, quality and the benefits it has brought to Oman.

Speaking about the Project of the Year award, Carillion Alawi's operations manager David Newell told CW, "I think we won because Carillion worked as a team to deliver another iconic, prestigious building. We worked closely with the client, for whom we have a lot of respect and who expects very high quality. In addition, working as a team with our supply chain made the overall project a great success."

Company regional MD Andy Jones accepted the HSE award and told CW, "I think safety is Carillion's priority in everything we do. Nothing is so important that it can't be done safely. That is absolutely the way that we approach everything we do. Safety first always. We target zero accidents to ensure that everyone goes home as well as they came to work."

Senior sustainability co-ordinator Raja Packrisamy was thrilled to recieve the Sustainability Initiative of the Year.

"I'm really excited. Carillion Alawi is very keen to protect the planet and implement sustainable initiatives. Timber is important for global activities. Saving it and sourcing proper resources is our goal."

Winners from the Construction Week Awards – Oman, which was sponsored by Famco, will get a further chance to claim success at the GCC edition of the Construction Week Awards, to be held in Dubai, in December.
