New contractor appointed: Al Hamad Construction & Development will take over construction on the Marina West development.

Al Hamad Construction & Development will now undertake the main construction of Bahrain's Marina West development after a contract awarded earlier this year to a joint venture of Bahrain-based Poullaides Construction Company and Greek firm Terna fell through.

According to Rabih Rib, senior executive - public relations, Marina West, the contract changed hands in June this year.

Al Hamad Construction & Development is undertaking the contract, estimated to be worth US $305 million (BD 115 million), as a design and build.

"They [PCC-Terna] didn't provide what they promised they would on time. And we didn't see any improvement. So the contract was given to Al Hamad Construction & Development," said Rib.

Work on the initial concept for the beachfront high-rise development into a fully detailed design with working drawings is reaching an advanced stage, with construction expected to begin by the middle of next year.

The client for the development is AAJ Holdings Company.

Comprising 350,000m2 of residential, retail and leisure space, Marina West will be Bahrain's largest gated beachfront residential community.

Eleven towers will accommodate apartments, duplexes, simplexes, penthouse suites, along with a range of leisure, recreation and entertainment facilities. Alongside these will be a marina, private beach and retail facilities.

"Al Hamad has a very strong reputation within the Bahrain construction market and a track record that instills trust," said Ahmed Janahi, chairman and chief executive officer of AAJ Holdings Company.

Among Al Hamad's other projects in Bahrain are Abraj Al Lulu and Villamar at the Harbour. The company is also the main contractor on the Jordan Gate project.
