Bahrain-based contractor Ahmed Mansoor Al Aali has won a US $216 million (BD81.3 million) design and build contract for the Downtown Al Areen project in Bahrain.
The client is Gulf Holding Company (GHC).
Ahmed Mansoor Al Aali will be responsible for the construction of the main boulevard including retail and residential areas as well as offices, a supermarket and a hotel.
Construction will begin in the first quarter of 2008 and is scheduled for completion at the end of 2009.
UK-based Atkins is the main designer for the project.
Spread over 260,000m2, Downtown Al Areen is a mixed-use project that will include a town square, in addition to a school, recreational facilities and retail outlets.
"Downtown Al Areen was conceived with the aim of providing Bahrain with its first truly downtown district and in the process significantly contributing to the Kingdom's booming tourism sector," said Ahmed Al Ameer, vice chairman & chief executive officer, GHC.
"The award of this contract marks a significant forward movement towards making this goal a reality. Given the nature and scope of this strategic project, it was absolutely essential that we appoint the best qualified partners, especially those with vast local experience.
"After an exhaustive global tendering process we found Ahmed Mansoor Al Aali Company to be best suited for this assignment."
