Abu Dhabi's Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC) is inviting contractors to pre-qualify for the main contract to build the Guggenheim museum on Saadiyat Island.

The scope of the works includes concrete substructure, concrete superstructure, structural steelwork, glulam timber structure/glazed cladding to the cones, MEP, vertical transportation, specialist security installation, fit-out works and external works.

Designed by celebrity architect Frank Gehry, TDIC said the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is conceived as a dynamic institution devoted to the acquisition and display of modern and contemporary art, recognised for the excellence of its architecture, collections, exhibitions, and educational initiatives.

It will promote the understanding and appreciation of art, architecture, and other manifestations of visual culture from a broadly international perspective, while sustaining the heritage of its local environment, the organisation adds.

In January 2012, TDIC announced the museum is scheduled for completion in 2017, a year later than Foster’s Zayed National Museum and two years after Nouvel’s Louvre Abu Dhabi.

Speaking at an event in Abu Dhabi in November last year, 84 year-old Gehry joked that he hoped to see the project built in his lifetime: " I’m worried about if they are going to finish on time, so I can see it.”

Contractors who meet the criteria can register their interest and request a pre-qualification document (PQD), at before Thursday 22 August 2013 and arrange for collection by Sunday August 25 2013.

Responses to the PQD must be submitted in a sealed envelope no later than 4pm on Sunday 8 September 2013.
