ASHORE FOR THE FIRST TIME: the Japanese-made trains for the Dubai Metro arrive in Dubai.
LCL Interiors Contracting, a UAE subsidiary of Malaysia's LCL Corporation, has been awarded a US $87.74 million (AED 322 million) contract for installation work on Dubai Metro's Red Line.
The company said the contract was awarded by Dubai Metro's main contractor, a joint venture team led by Mitsubishi Corporation and including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Obayashi Corporation, Kajima Corporation, all of Japan, and Turkey's Yapi Merkezi.
The contract involves the design, supply and installation of the main arrangement works for the Red Line stations.
Work is expected to be finished in the second quarter of 2009.
The project forms part of LCL Interiors Contracting's plan to target more contracts in the $80-$200 million range in Dubai and the wider Middle East.
In January, the company won a $44.9 million contract from main contractor Arabtec Construction for the interior fit-out works at the Tiara United Tower in Dubai.
The company has also placed bids for other interior-fit out contracts ranging from $124 to $186 million.
"This is a very exciting year for LCL in the Middle East," said the company's managing director Low Chin Meng.
The company previously said that it was working towards an order book of around $300 million in the Middle East.
"But if we take on projects amounting to this we would need a few hundred million in working capital," added Meng.
