Born in Riyadh, Ahmed Alhatti is the man behind the $272mn “twisting tower” called Cayan Tower, in Dubai Marina. The 75-storey skyscraper was delivered after seven years last June following a series of delays. It has since gone on to win plaudits and awards for its original design, which reduces wind forces on the tower. Alhatti told CW in February that he was assessing land options for more projects in Dubai. “I am taking my time in the UAE, because everyone is waiting to see what we will do after Cayan Tower. We want to do something unique; we can’t just do a normal building anymore.”

O liver Plunkett has just been installed as the new Middle East managing director for Buro Happold, replacing Roger Nickells, who has been promoted to the role of CEO at the UK-based consulting practice. However, he is not new to the region, having joined the practice in 2010 to lead its Saudi Arabian office. The firm is currently engaged in landmark projects in the Kingdom, such as the King Abdul Aziz Centre for World Culture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Institute for Diplomatic Studies, Atturaif Historic Restoration and the King Abdullah Financial District project.
