UAE-based Amana Contracting and Steel Buildings has been awarded a US $9 million (AED33.4 million) contract to construct a building for the Tabreed Cooling Plant at Dubai Metros project at Al Rigga, Union Square, Dubai.

Canada-based SNC-Lavalin Gulf Contractors made the award.

The new building is expected to be done by next April and will spread over an area of 800m2.

Amana special projects general manager Mohammed Al-Qarout felt the project would be a challenge for Amana due to the congestion in the Al Rigga area.

He said: "The civil architecture building for Dubai Metro Plant in Dubai is a prestigious project for us. The cooling plant has two levels in the basement due to height restrictions in the area."

"Moreover, it is a very challenging project for Amana considering that Al Rigga is a very congested area and most of the construction will be carried out only at night."

He also said that health and safety on the job were of prime importance to the company.

"It is imperative for us to meet the highest standards of safety and quality requirements of SNC-Lavalin Gulf Contractors and to keep with the time schedule."
