It is “doubtful” that Dubai Municipalities (DM) green regulations will be unveiled at next week’s Big 5 exhibition, organisers of the show have told Construction Week.
DMG World Media vice-president Simon Mellor said that though those preparing the regulations have been working “under immense pressure” to have them ready in time. It was currently touch and go as to whether this would be achieved, he said.
DM was due to announce the technicalities of its green regulations at the Big 5 Technical Conference on Monday.
The regulations are being prepared by the DM working alongside consultancy firm WSP Middle East. They become effective January 1.
Mellor made his comments on the sidelines of a press conference held today by show organizers, who also unveiled plans to avoid the traffic chaos that has plagued recent industry events at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre, the venue for the Big 5.
A park-and-ride scheme will operate from three locations – the rear of the Fairmont Hotel, the Al Wasl Sports Club building and the Wonderland car park behind the Grand Hyatt Hotel. All venues are a short drive from the exhibition halls.
“We want people who are not visiting for business purposes to use the scheme,” Mellor said. “Of course we still want people to come here, but we do not want them to be put off because they are worried about finding somewhere to park.”
Show organisers said that the global financial crisis has yet to seriously impact suppliers of products and services to the Middle East building and construction sector.
“It would be foolish to suggest that the global financial situation will not impact the region and no doubt some projects will be scaled back,” DMG World Media managing director Bernard Walsh said.
“But the fact remains that the Arabian Gulf is one of the few places in the world where growth is expected to continue with governments supporting major infrastructure projects.”
