The American University of Sharjah is planning to offer a minor in landscape architecture from next year with plans to gradually grow this into an independent degree programme.
Speaking with Commercial Outdoor Design, Fatih Rifki, dean, School of Architecture and Design at the American University of Sharjah said the university planned to offer a minor in landscape architecture for students that are studying architecture and interior design from next fall.
“Our intention within the next three to five years is to grow this into a degree programme that will be a five-year course of study,” he said.
Rifki explained that as a design school, it was important to cover all design disciplines.
“Everyone knows this regions needs [a landscape] discipline. We need professionals educated in this discipline,” he said.

The move marks a gradual increase in focus by regional universities on landscape study after previous neglect of the discipline.
Abu Dhabi University launched for the first time last autumn a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture.
Ajman University of Science and Technology also provides modules in landscape architecture and urban planning, while outside of the UAE, universities in Egypt, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia also offer courses in landscaping.
The number of landscape architecture courses in the region is still miniscule in comparison to in other parts of the world, however.
In the UK, for example, there are over 90 courses in landscape architecture and related disciplines, according to the University and Colleges Admissions Service.
