Discarded construction waste on empty plots of land in residential areas of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is an obstacle to real estate investment, experts said today.
Abdullah Al Ahmari, a real estate assessor and the vice president of the real estate committee, said disposing of waste in such areas was an environmental disaster that affects humans and animals alike.
Disposing of waste also had an economic effect which reduces the value of land, he said, noting that property values drop because of waste being thrown on land, especially in residential areas.
Al Ahmari said that the Jeddah municipality needed to develop a program to impose fines on companies that discard construction waste in vacant lots.
He said that places outside the city limits should be allocated for the disposal of such waste and that the municipality, in failing to deal with the issue, had made the situation worse.
Sa’ad Al-Nafjan, the former president of the city’s real estate committee, said the municipality should be as strict with enforcing environmental issues as it is with issuing licenses for shops.
