Dubai Municipality’s Waste Management Department has launched a community initiative called ‘Recover the value of your waste’.

The initiative is to raise awareness about the importance of waste minimisation through proper sorting of recyclable materials.

This process in turn reduces pollution, conserves resources and diverts the bulk of waste from landfill, the authority said in a statement.

Residents can hand over recyclable materials at the Emirates Cooperative Society in Al Tawar 3, at the designated site and then receive coupons to be replaced with foodstuffs.

The initiative will continue until the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Eng. Talib Julfar, Assistant Director General of Dubai Municipality for Environment and Public Health Services Sector launched the initiative at the Emirates Cooperative Society premises in the presence of Eng. Abdulmajeed Sifai, Director of Waste Management Department and a number of employees and officials of the department and those interested in environmental issues.

Julfar said that the launch of this initiative comes within the framework of the strategic directions of Dubai Municipality to interact with the community in its various activities and programs and to contribute to its environmental efforts.

“Dubai Municipality strives through all its initiatives to achieve the objectives of Dubai's environmental culture and enhance its position among the cities of the world as a sustainable city. The ‘Recover the Value of Your Waste’ initiative confirms Dubai Municipality's pioneering role as an environmental awareness and social responsibility agency,” he said.

“The aim of this initiative is to establish a culture of sorting the waste from its source and classifying it as per its value and enhancing the level of environmental awareness among the public, especially the visitors to the shopping malls and markets,” said Julfar.

Sifai said that the Waste Management Department staff and a number of volunteers from the participating companies will make the public aware of the importance of contributing to the sorting of waste and the commitment to cleanliness and environmental safety, so that this commitment becomes a behavioral pattern that reveals the cultural sense of individuals and the society as well as a part of the social customs and traditions.
