Job activity has seen an upswing in the GCC, experts from the regional construction recruitment sector told ConstructionWeekOnline (CWO).

Among the professionals that are optimistic about the GCC's employment market is Ali Matar, head of LinkedIn Talent Solutions for emerging markets, and Middle East and North Africa (MENA). 

In an exclusive interview with CWO, Matar outlines the top skills that employers are seeking in prospective employees, as well as the challenges faced by construction professionals in the GCC.

Which construction roles are among the most-searched in the UAE?

According to LinkedIn’s Industry Talent Report of April 2017, contract management is the most sought-after role by construction companies over the past year in the UAE.

Construction management is the second most in-demand skill, followed by project planning, project estimation, and procurement.

How does the UAE fare in terms of construction job uploads and searches on LinkedIn?

Various announcements about new construction projects especially in the UAE, such as The Tower at Dubai Creek and Dubai Harbour, along with news about existing properties being expanded, have made the construction industry a lucrative one.

However, according to LinkedIn’s Industry Talent Report, Kuwait has also recorded growth in terms of employment of construction industry professionals, with a huge 5.2% growth since last year, followed by the UAE's 4.9%. 

What are the major challenges faced by salaried and unemployed construction professionals in the GCC?

The GCC remains one of the busiest locations for construction in the world, but recent economic fluctuations have had an impact on the construction industry.
