International aluminium smelter Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) has announced the start of construction works on its Line 6 expansion project will be in Q2 2017, following the completion of the FEED (front end-engineering and design) study.

The Line 6 expansion project plot covers an area of approximately 60 hectares.

The required earthwork cut-and-fill volume is about 1.8 million cubic metres, and surface mining was chosen as the preferred method to remove earthwork materials in order to meet the schedule and cost requirements of this project.

The contract for removal of bulk material for the project was awarded to Bahraini contractors that are now working in conjunction with the surface miners.

“Line 6 expansion project has started to take shape with the site being mobilised for preparation work, the forerunner to the rapid start of construction activities,” said Daij Bin Salman Bin Daij Al Khalifa, chairman of the board of directors, Alba.

Earthworks at the Line 6 expansion project are expected to be complete by the end of September 2017.
