Jeddah airport expansion project 90% complete

Construction on the $7.2bn King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) expansion in Jeddah is reportedly 90% complete, a local Saudi newspaper reported on Sunday.

The airport, which began expansion works in 2006, is scheduled to start trial operations for Phase 1 in early 2018, according to the Arabic language daily Al Madina.

The three-phase project is expected to increase the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity to 100 million in its final stage.

Upon completion, the airport will eventually serve 36.5% of the total passengers using Saudi airports, Ibrahim Mandoura, director general (planning and studies) of the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), said in June.

The expansion includes the construction of two new terminals across an area of 810,000m2 which will cater to both domestic and international passengers and allow all airlines to operate under one roof.

It will also have one of the tallest control towers in the world at a height of 136 metres.

The Haramain High-speed Rail project is also on track for completion by the end of this year, the newspaper reported.

The high-speed rail will eventually be connected to the new airport expansion, along with taxi services, metro, and bus stations.
