The plant will meet the irrigation demand at Durrat Al Bahrain
Bahrain’s Nass Contracting Company has won a US $7.96 million (BAH 3 million) contract to build infrastructure and ancillary works for a sea water desalination plant at Durrat Al Bahrain.
The plant will produce 12000m3 of desalinated water a day and meet the irrigation demand at Durrat Al Bahrain, a US $6 billion mixed use residential development off the southern coast of Bahrain.
The contract was awarded by Energy Central Co (ECC) who last year signed a 25-year deal to design, build and operate the plant.
ECC CEO Khalil Issa said the contract with Nass was a definitive symbol of the company’s stable footing in the midst of the current global slowdown.
He said Nass will start construction immediately, which will include buildings to house the plant together with storage tanks, pipelines, offices and site works.

Equipment for phase one of the project is already under manufacture and strategic areas of the plant are due for completion by September 2009 in order to permit installation of the desalination and electrical equipment.
Pre-engineered buildings have been selected to minimise the construction period so that the new plant can be in service before the end of the year and augment the present temporary facility.
The facilities have also been designed for phased expansion of the desalination plant in line with the landscaping requirements of Durrat Al Bahrain.
The desalination project will operate using reverse osmosis technology and the total capacity when all phases are completed will be in excess of 32,000m3 daily.
ECC was established in 2005 as a multi-utilities services company owned by major organisations including Al Zamil Industrial Investments Co and Kuwait Finance House.
The company works with developers to provide water treatment, cooling, power and energy to a variety of projects.
