Extra-large is the order of the day at the second Saudi PMV Show. Featuring dozens of manufacturers and dealers displaying heavy equipment, the show includes a live demonstration area, programme of seminars and more than 60 exhibitors in related trades.
Bucking the worldwide trend for downsizing and slowdown, work in the Kingdom continues apace, thanks to a number of large road, rail and utilities projects. This in turn has encouraged local buyers to upsize their orders, to heavier machines as they find the larger equipment is more efficient.
One of the machines on display included a Sany 155-tonne lattice boom crane, which is popular with contractors seeking a larger machine for infrastructure work. With an 81m boom the machine is usually put to work at building bridges and the like. Engineer Hussein M Hassanin, a salesman for dealer Al-Qahtani said: “There is a lot of interest in this type of equipment at the moment.”

A number of dealers have increased their stock levels of road machinery. Jamjoom Equipment, which has supplied trucks and equipment since the early 1970s, recently increased the number of vibratory and pneumatic rollers.
“In the last few years we had a business boom, thanks to the various highway and rail projects. We have a good market share in this area” said vice president Marwan Ahamed Jamjoom. “We look forward to continuing through 2009, maybe not quite in the same way, but sales are still good.” The firm have several outlets across the Kingdom, where they supply and service Sakai.
In the demonstration area, Caterpillar were among the companies to show off its wares. A 7-series dump truck performed manoeuvres with a 320L excavator and a 14M grader. This new-style grader uses a fully electronic control system, meaning the machine is operated with just two levers, rather than the usual ten or more.
A spokesman for local dealer Zahid Tractor said: “Graders are notoriously difficult to use, so a high quality machine that takes the stress away from the operator is going to result in more efficiency, with less need to re-pass work”.
The show, being held alongside the Buildex expo in the Dahran exhibition centre, runs until the 10th of March.
