I don’t know if you’ve noticed it at your place of work or at home, but security seems to have hit Dubai’s radar of late.
For me it started with the security guards at the ITP offices based at International Media and Production Zone diligently noting the registration number of every car in the car park – although there was a dispute between the boss and his staff as to which particular numbers on the plate to note.
Now IMPZ is fairly remote at the moment with a small number of media companies taking space there, so why the new measures? What looks to be a district cooling plant is under construction nearby, so you could point to industrial espionage, or maybe it’s the intellectual property rights of the aforementioned media companies…
And it’s getting tighter. In the mornings the guard stops all traffic coming into the zone and again takes registration numbers. What he does with this information is not clear, but if you look at it in the wider context it could be Dubai is feeling just a little vulnerable at the moment.

I read then with interest about the closure of the historic dhow harbour due to security concerns. This traditional site at Dubai Creek has enabled trade from ancient shipping lanes throughout the Gulf, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean for over a hundred years and is at the heart of the city.
Hundreds of vessels travel between Dubai and Iran each day, and it would seem compliance with UN sanctions to deny Iran access to dual-use technology which could have military and nuclear applications, as well as civilian, is behind the move. The Mumbai massacre could also be an element, as the attackers came into the city by boat.
Whatever the reason it’s affecting us all to a greater or lesser degree. I would be interested to hear from facilities managers out there that have tightened their security recently and why. Drop me a line at: paul.collett@itp.com
