Located in the heart of Dubai South, District 2020 forms a key part of Expo 2020 Dubai’s legacy strategy to reuse 80% of its site infrastructure.

In keeping with Expo 2020’s theme, ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’, the megaproject will involve the integration and repurposing of many of the exhibition’s existing assets.

The following list contains Construction Week’s round-up of the top 10 facts you need to know about District 2020.

1. From Q4 2021, District 2020 will become the post-exhibition home of the Santiago Calatrava-designed UAE Pavilion, and Expo 2020’s centrepiece, Al Wasl Plaza.

2. All of District 2020’s buildings will meet or exceed LEED Gold standards.

3. District 2020 will retain Expo 2020’s conference and exhibition centre, which is being developed by Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC).

4. Expo 2020’s Sustainability Pavilion will be transformed into a Children and Science Centre following the conclusion of the world’s fair.

5. District 2020 will feature a diverse selection of academic institutions, museums, and galleries.

6. The project will host one of the world’s first 5G mobile networks.

7. District 2020 will feature 135,000m2 of commercial space, 65,000m2 of residential space, 45,900m2 of parkland, and 10km of cycling tracks.

8. The district will be situated at the junction of four major highways, adjacent to Al Maktoum International Airport and close to the upcoming Project Star mall.

9. District 2020 will boast a dedicated metro station, which will form part of the Route 2020 Dubai Metro line.

10. The site’s transition from Expo 2020 to District 2020 will begin as soon as the world’s fair draws to a close, with work scheduled to commence on 11 April, 2021.
