The Retrofit Project of the Year award went to Black & White Engineering for its Dubai Festival City Mall project.

The mall is a landmark urban retail resort which forms the centre of Dubai Festival City, now acknowledged to be one of UAE's most exciting retail, dining and leisure attractions.

The design included changes to every MEP system, how those systems are controlled & how the landlord bills their tenants.

The reduced external surface area of the mall coupled with the increased efficiency of the new MEP systems & building fabric, pointed towards a reduction in the solar and conductive thermal gains for the building.

Jamie Darragh, associate director, Black & White Engineering, said: “The retrofit project of the year was Dubai Festival City Mall. We were involved in the extension of Festival Square, and it was a huge job. It was basically an upgrade of the existing mall, and extensive development.

“It took four years of hard work from design teams to our site supervision teams, but I think everyone who was involved in the project deserves a pat on the back.”

Talking about the future outlook for the company, Darragh said: “Black & White’s priorities would be just to consolidate our position in the market, and continue to develop our engineering staff and just continue to improve as a business and as an engineering team.”
