Development work is set to commence on the 22ha Phase 1 of a bus manufacturing facility in Oman.

A ceremony will be held on 30 November, 2017, to kick off Karwa Motors' project in Duqm Special Economic Zone.

Oman Investment Fund, the sultanate's sovereign wealth unit, holds a 30% stake in the project.

Phase 1 works are expected to cost $90m (OMR34.7m), and employ around 200 people, with the latter figure expected to double as the project expands.

The plant will have an initial capacity to produce 1,000 buses annually, with the number expected to be 3,000 buses at peak capacity.

Coach and city (pictured) buses, including those for civil and school transportation, will be manufactured within the facility, ONA reported.

Upon completion, the plant will support Karwa Motors' plans to sell its products in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) market, with the Omani market being the priority.
