The Louvre Abu Dhabi has been listed as one of BBC Culture’s best buildings of 2017, which also included the Musée Yves Saint Laurent in Marrakech, Morocco by Studio Ko.

The list highlights the year’s various cultural developments, recognising the entry of the two regional projects for their exceptional design, according to designmena.com.

BBC Culture has ranked eight new internationally-acclaimed buildings based on their contemporary architecture and design in 2017.

Having opened its doors in autumn of 2017, the Musée Yves Saint Laurent is dedicated to the work of the legendary French fashion designer, and features cubic forms in terracotta, concrete and earthen-coloured terrazo while Moroccan stone fragments blend into the surroundings.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi also opened last fall and was met with both public praise and criticism. The museum intended to reflect a ‘traditional Middle Eastern city’ through its passage-ways, courtyards and cubic forms.

Designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, the Louvre Abu Dhabi officially opened its doors in November 2017 after several years of delays, with completion initially slated for 2012.

The project was the result of a collaboration between Abu Dhabi and France that was approved in October 2007.

Louvre Abu Dhabi is set to open alongside the Frank Gehry-designed Guggenhiem Abu Dhabi, Foster + Partners' Zayed National Museum, and a performing arts centre designed by Zaha Hadid.
