Latifa Hospital for Women and Children has announced that it will commence expansion activities in a bid to double its capacity and align its services with international modern practices.

The hospital’s labour and delivery suite, as well as emergency department, are among the facilities that will undergo expansion, according to UAE state news agency, WAM.

Previously called Al Wasl Hospital, Latifa Hospital is Dubai's oldest and largest maternity and paediatric government hospital.

Commenting on the hospital’s expansion, Dr Muna Tahlak, chief executive officer of Latifa Hospital, said: "The design will enhance accessibility, safety, and delivery of service.

“The expansion will not only increase capacity but also improve patient flow procedures, minimise patient transfers from one location to another, and enhance overall care. Two more operation theatre rooms will be added, [bringing the number of] rooms to six.”

He added: “Presently, approximately 5,000 to 6,000 deliveries take place per year at the hospital. Post the expansion, we will be able to handle close to 10,000 deliveries per year."

Expansion plans for the hospital were first announced last year, with Dubai Health Authority (DHA) revealing that a new fertility centre building was in the pipeline for Latifa Hospital.
