Nanotechnology-enhanced paints are better suited for Dubai’s climate compared to normal ones, according to research conducted by Dubai Central Laboratory (DCL) in Dubai Municipality.

The DCL organised a seminar to share details of the study on the impact of nanotech in paints, which was attended by a large number of contractors, consultants, engineers and specialists.

The event was also attended by several high profile delegates for the municipality.

Hind Al Rahma, head of the Chemical Analysis Unit gave a detailed presentation of the study conducted by the laboratory, which included the construction of a typical house, half of which was painted with nanotech-enhanced paint and the other half with normal paint.

The model was exposed to climatic conditions in Dubai since May 2017, characterised by high temperatures and humidity in addition to dust.

“Laboratory and field tests were carried out, the most important of which was the color retention test by exposing the samples to more than 500 hours under the influence of ultraviolet rays, heat and humidity. Other tests, such as the solar reflective index and the light reflective value of different paint samples, were also conducted,” said Al Rahma.

The research stated that nanotech-enhanced paint showed greater ability to retain its original colour, it also showed an increased resistance to dust, bacteria and fungi, in addition to showing increased solar reflective index and light reflective value, Al Rahma explained.
