Recruiter focus: Rudolph Van Wyk, Thomas & Adamson

How long have you been in your current role and where did you work before?

I joined Thomas & Adamson at the end of October 2017 as associate director. I was an associate at BTK Pretoria Inc, in South Africa, from 2009 to 2014, before making the decision to relocate to the UAE, where I joined Nabih Elias Azzam & Partners. I was with the latter from 2014 to 2017.

What are the key challenges that you face in your current role?

Time is always one of the greatest challenges, not only in the construction industry, but in most working environments.

Being involved in in-house deliverables planning, as well as the final QA/QS processes, the main challenge for me is usually allocating – and managing – the right amount of time, together with the right number of resources required to deliver a particular task on deadline and to a client’s specific requirements. This always becomes more challenging when new deliverables get added to the mix on short notice, or special client requests need to be attended to within a short amount of time. I found that good communication is usually the key to overcoming said challenges.

Keeping in-house management and staff aware of the priorities, as well as keeping clients well informed, can go a long way in managing expectations and the associated time implications.

What is your most memorable professional achievement?

Two memories stand out: when I was promoted from senior quantity surveyor to associate at BTK Pretoria, thus getting the opportunity to become more involved in the day-to-day management of the company, as well as moving into a more client-facing role.

And, more recently, getting the opportunity to join Thomas & Adamson as associate director and becoming part of a dynamic team, committed to delivering a premium service to clients that is in line with the company’s core cultural values of confidence, honesty, responsibility, and support. It’s great joining a team that has the same outlook and professional conduct that I have.
