The bare necessities needed on every construction site from heavy equipment to safety clothes.
In order to put any plan into action, a list of essentials is required. Whether you’re going rock climbing, cooking pasta or building a box you need that ‘bare minimum’. Construction Week light-heartedly handpicks the top 10 things every construction site needs in order to get your building project going.
1- Backhoe Loader
The backhoe loader, commonly referred to as a JCB, has become synonymous with a construction site. There can’t be one without the other.

The backhoe loader was invented in the UK in 1953 by Joseph Cyril Bamford (JCB), by equipping a farm tractor with both a backhoe and a front-mounted loading bucket. Backhoe loaders are very common and can be seen across almost every construction site in the region.
They can be used for a wide variety of tasks including construction, small demolitions, light transportation of building materials, powering building equipment, digging holes and excavating, landscaping, breaking asphalt and paving roads.
2- Aerial work platform
An aerial work platform (AWP) or elevating work platform is a mechanical device used to provide temporary access for people or equipment to inaccessible areas, usually at height. A mobile elevating work platform describes a type of AWP which can be moved along the ground whilst extended. An AWP may also be known as a lift table, lift platform or cherry picker.
AWPs are generally used for temporary, flexible access purposes such as maintenance and construction work. They are designed to lift limited weights, usually less than a tonne, although some have a higher safe working load.
3- Generators
Generators need no introduction in this region. From Dubai’s Business Bay to Qatar’s corniche, generators are the lifeline of construction activity. In more scientific terms, a generator is a device that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy, mostly using electromagnetic induction.
4- Concrete Mixer
A concrete mixer is a device that homogeneously combines cement, aggregate such as sand or gravel, and water to form concrete. A typical concrete mixer uses a revolving drum to mix the components. For smaller volume works portable concrete mixers are often used so that the concrete can be made at the construction site, giving the workers ample time to use the concrete before it hardens.
