ECC chosen as main contractor for Nshama’s UNA project

UAE-based Engineering Contracting Company (ECC) has been chosen as the main contractor for Nshama’s UNA project, a mixed-use building located within the Town Square development, Nshama's chief executive has revealed.

The contract was awarded in early April and includes enabling works, which will begin this week, Fred Durie, CEO at Nshama told Construction Week in an interview. 

“We have six contractors on site at the moment, two infrastructure contractors, and a couple of landscape contractors,” he said.

The company has started mobilizing and is scheduled to break ground in May 2018. 

“They are mobilising now and will set up the site office, so next month they will start work,” Durie added. “There is no basement level, therefore there will be no need to do advanced shoring and excavation work.”

According to ECC, the project will be developed over a duration of 25 months, and will require design and construction of the G+2P+9 Storey building, as well as a mixed-use development with numerous retail areas on the ground floor, 192 studios, and 764 one-bedroom apartments. 

Al Wasl Al Jadeed Consultants have been hired to consult on the project.

Kareem Farah, CEO, ECC, in a statement to Construction Week, said: “The Rawda and UNA Apartments projects at Town Square affirm our strategic partnership with Nshama Properties, with whom we are starting a new and exciting journey.

"These types of projects provide a strong indication of the direction of the UAE construction sector, and how with the strong growth rate of the national GDP, rising infrastructure spend, and a diversified economy, 2018 and the years to come will present significant opportunities for the UAE.

"We look forward to working on more dynamic, challenging, and innovative projects with Nshama and our other partners.”

UNA, a mixed-use development introducing the first ‘co-living and co-working concept’ in Dubai, is scheduled to complete by the end of 2020.

Durie also revealed that the developer is in the early stages of launching a second, 40 to 50 room boutique hotel within Town Square.

"We were thinking of introducing a boutque hotel, which we are looking at now and that may come earlier [than the Vida hotel]," he said. 

The complete Town Square development, which is being constructed in three phases, is estimated to complete by 2025.
