Tunnelling work complete on Dubai Metro

Tunnelling work for the Red and Green Lines of Dubai Metro has been completed.

Tunnelling work for the Red and Green Lines of Dubai Metro has been completed the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced.

Engineer Adnan Al Hammadi, director of construction of Dubai Metro at the RTA's Rail Agency said construction of the 12.6km underground tracks was currently at the most critical stage.

"The metro track goes underground in the Central Business District on both sides of the Dubai Creek and runs under the buildings, road corridors and also passes under the creek waters at two locations," Al Hammadi told local newspaper Gulf News.

"The tunnelling work has been completed and the tunnel boring machines named Al Wugeisha have been dismantled," he said.

Al Hammadi reaffirmed previous assertions that the project is well on schedule saying the Red Line would open on September 9.

To date, 90% of building work on the Red Line has been completed and 55% of the Green Line, which is due to open in March next year.

Work still to be completed on the Red Line is the fitting and cladding of installations at stations and car parks and the building of viaduct emergency evacuation staircases and access roads.
