A $136m (AED500m) contract has been awarded to build a five-star hotel on Dubai’s Sheikh Zayed Road.

Al Habbai Contracting has won RSG Group of Companies’ deal to build the Sabah Rotana, a 54-storey building that will feature a hotel and hotel apartments.

INTERVIEW: Raj Sahni, RSG Group of Companies

According to RSG, the hotel features a design that is a “marked departure from the standard architectural” schemes in the city. This includes asymmetrical balconies, plus pointed and tapered sides to add “a layered dimension” to the building.

RSG said the building’s design would both “inspire and challenge” the project team, adding that the facility was pre-approved as a five-star hotel by the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM).

Due to be launched before Expo 2020 Dubai kicks off, the project is expected to span 2.5 years. RSG said Al Habbai’s track record in the construction sector “tipped the scales” in its favour, helping it beat off competition from “a competent list of contract firms [that] bid for the project”.

The hotel is being developed in Sufouh Gardens, and will comprise hotel rooms, serviced apartments, food and beverage (F&B) outlets, meeting rooms, other hospitality amenities.

Commenting on the contract, Raj Sahni, founder and chairman of RSG, said it was “tough to finalise the main contractor”, because his team required an outfit that delivered “the same level of passion and commitment towards Sabah Rotana”.

He continued: “In the end, the search yielded great results in the form of Al Habbai Contracting, whom we welcome to a long partnership with us. As evidenced by their past work, they have validated themselves as the perfect choice for the position.”

Ali Al Habbai, chairman and chief executive officer of Al Habbai Contracting, added: “[This contract] will serve as an incentive going forward as we strive to not only achieve but surpass [RSG’s] expectations.”
