A company secretary and driver have denied offering a US $1300 (AED6000) bribe to an inspector of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to approve testing of their firm’s heavy machine drivers in an inappropriate place, according to local media.
The UAE daily newspaper Gulf News reported the RTA inspector escorted the secretary and driver - both who work for a company which leases heavy machinery - to inspect the place where he was supposed to test the company’s drivers for licences.
“The place was inappropriate and inconvenient to test heavy machinery drivers. The suspects gave me an envelope containing between Dh5,000 and Dh6,000 to approve testing the drivers in that spot.
“I refused the envelope and threw it in the driver’s car and left,” said the inspector, referred to as AH.
The Public Prosecution charged the secretary, PK, and the driver, JG, with buying-off the RTA inspector.

When the defendants appeared before Presiding Judge Fahmi Mounir at the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday, they pleaded not guilty.
But AH said PK had sent him a text message apologising for her actions.
“She said in her message, ‘I committed a mistake, please don’t inform my company.’ They gave me the money because they wanted me to test the drivers in the inconvenient spot,” said the Emirati, who reported the incident to his boss.
The trial is set to continue in May.
